The Vision of Escaflowne

The Vision of Escaflowne is a 26-episode Japanese anime television series directed by Kazuki Akane and produced by Sunrise Studios. It debuted on TV Tokyo on April 2, 1996, with the final episode showing on September 24, 1996. The series was also carried on Sony's anime satellite station, Animax, both in Japan and on its many overseas networks, including Hong Kong, Taiwan, Southeast Asia, and South Asia. Bandai Entertainment has licensed the series for Region 1 release. The series follows Hitomi, a teenage high school girl who is drawn from Earth to the planet Gaea when a boy named Van appears on the high school track while fighting a dragon. She gets caught in the thick of a conflict in Gaea as the Zaibach Empire strives to take over the country. Van, with the help of Allen, pilots his mystical mech Escaflowne in the fight against the Zaibach Empire. In Gaea, Hitomi's fortune-telling abilities bloom as she becomes the key to awakening Escaflowne and thwarting Zaibach's intentions. During the creation of the anime series, two completely different manga retellings of the story were written and released: a shnen rendition of the story titled The Vision of Escaflowne and a shjo retelling titled Hitomi—The Vision of Escaflowne. In addition, Escaflowne—Memories, Energist's a second shjo adaptation, was released as a single volume in 1997. Yumiko Tsukamoto, Hajime Yatate, and Shoji Kawamori adapted the narrative into a series of six light novels. Escaflowne: The Movie, a film adaptation, was released on June 24, 2000, but bears just a passing similarity to the original series. In addition to the series, four CD soundtracks and a drama CD have been issued.
