Kavanagh QC
From 1995 to 2001, Central Television produced the British television series Kavanagh QC for ITV. It is frequently repeated on ITV3 and series 1–6 are available on Region 2 DVDs. John Thaw portrayed the working-class Bolton, Greater Manchester-born barrister James Kavanagh QC in the television series. This is only revealed in later episodes, as his parents' health deteriorates, and during a conversation with a coworker who assumed Kavanagh was actually from Yorkshire. The series focused on his legal challenges as well as his family tragedies, including the death of his dedicated and loving wife. Later, he begins dating a barrister colleague. In court, Kavanagh is often shown defending a client who appears certain to be convicted until a twist in the case occurs, but infrequently he is seen prosecuting. Frequently, Kavanagh confronts cases with a subtext of racism, sexism, or other discrimination in the primary plot. In subplots, Jeremy's conceit and egotism as a snobbish barrister in chambers provided comic relief. Kavanagh will not tolerate injustice and is never intimidated in the courtroom by threats or bribery from his opponents.
