The Counterfeiters

The story centres around Bernard, an old schoolmate of Olivier's who is preparing for his baccalaureate, who discovers that he is a bastard and uses this as a convenient pretext to flee from his home. He sleeps in Olivier's bed for a night (where Olivier describes a recent visit to a prostitute and how he did not find the experience very enjoyable). Due to the events surrounding Bernard's theft of a luggage belonging to Edouard, Olivier's uncle, and the subsequent problems, he is appointed as Edouard's secretary. In the end, Olivier finds himself in the hands of the cold-hearted and simply evil Comte de Passavant, who joins him on his journey to the Mediterranean.
