The Carpetbaggers

"The Carpetbaggers" is a 1964 American film starring George Peppard as Howard Hughes and Alan Ladd as a former Western gunslinger turned actor who goes by the moniker Nevada Smith, played by Steve McQueen in a prequel the following year. The character of Jean Harlow, who appeared in the Hughes epic Hell's Angels, was played by Carroll Baker. Dmytryk directed The Carpetbaggers in 70mm; Ladd died a few months before its release. It was Dmytryk's final film. Howard Hughes-like entrepreneur George Peppard plays a major role in the film. People who care about him attempt to get to know the real him while he's busy doing all of those other things, but it's an uphill struggle. An allusion to self-promotional tycoons who seize control of companies quickly, impose authoritarian rule, and then leave for better opportunities elsewhere.
