Shadows of Forgotten Ancestors

Ivan meets and falls in love with Marichka while living in a village in the Carpathian Mountains. Marichka is the daughter of the man who murdered Ivan's father. His anguish over what happened to her lasted for several months, but eventually he got over it and married Palagna. Eventually, he rejoined the colorful life that was going on around him. She wants children, but he can't shake the thought of the woman he lost his heart to. In an effort to get Ivan's attention again, Palagna engages in some magic, but in the process, she falls victim to the sorcerer's spell. As a result, Ivan is publically embarrassed, and he responds by engaging in combat with the sorcerer. Ivan's tragedy is put into perspective by the bustling rhythms of village life, the work and the holidays, the pageantry and revelry of weddings and funerals, the changing of the seasons, and the breathtaking beauty of nature.
