Ésimésac urges Saint-Élie-de-starving Caxton's inhabitants to start a community garden. By working the land jointly, each individual will increase their yield. A new railway line will connect Saint-Élie-de-Caxton to the globe and provide wealth. Riopel, the burly blacksmith, starts building the railway track and gets the locals to invest in it rather than play in the garden.
