Two sketches depicting events from World War II. In "Scherzo alla polacca", a shrewd son battling for his skin becomes a hero and finds a purpose to fight. To escape the Warsaw uprising, he avoids subterranean training. His alcoholism, recklessness, and cowardice come across as sane in a mad environment. His desire to live outweighs his wish to die heroically. Two novels follow a man who can no longer endure the confinement and idiocy of the professional soldiers striving to keep up the military preneses in prison.
