April returns to Toronto after several years of traveling and working overseas to assist her sister, Sara, in caring for their ailing mother. April's return actually unearths long-buried family secrets that threaten the home's delicate balance. Sara, who is studying the music of French composer Erik Satie, befriends a homeless man Erik, who may have a connection to her mother's romantic past, while April is undecided about a marriage proposal from Oscar, her long-distance boyfriend whom she met on her travels. The story climax on the eve of their mother's birthday supper, when Oscar unexpectedly returns from Argentina and Sara's homeless acquaintance attends.
