Tennie's reputation at school takes a huge knock a few years after her mother's death, just before the prom. To add to the daily rigors of adolescence, her father, Robert, an advertising executive who has now rebuilt his firm, attempts to rebuild his relationship with his daughter as well. Against his therapist's advice, overeager Robert tries very hard to get close to Tennie by demonstrating his own caring style. He enlists the assistance of his newly appointed, 19-year-old driver/intern, Jack, to learn about his daughter's personal life. Tennie, who is practically raised by her extended family, is intellectually minded and mature for her age, with a strong sense of sympathy for others. She also has a touch of sarcasm and a tinge of rebelliousness. Tennie realizes she needs to persuade her father to find a lady friend after she discovers her father's plan.
