The occult sciences and esotericism were hugely popular in Petersburg around the end of the nineteenth century. On tour in Russia's capital, British medium Olivia Reed draws large crowds to her public spiritualistic meetings. In the city during this time, there are a series of unexplained ritual murders. Girls are kidnapped on the streets, and their mutilated remains are discovered throughout the city. Rostov and his subordinate Ganin, a young police investigator, are in charge of the inquiry. Things are getting increasingly complicated with each new victim. Suspicion leads Rostov to Olivia, and he chooses to approach her in the hopes that her real or imagined capacity to conjure the spirits of the dead will aid in catching the killer.
