Oscar Grubman is surrounded by beautiful, smart ladies. He is sensitive and sympathetic, fluent in French, passionate about Voltaire, and believes that a woman's hands reveal the most about her. Oscar confides in his best friend on the train home from Chauncey Academy for the Thanksgiving weekend that he has plans for this vacation—he will win the heart of his true love. However, there is one significant snag: Oscar's true love is his stepmother Eve. Oscar is convinced that he would make a better match for Eve than his workaholic father. He is depressed as a result of his failure to win Eve's heart. Oscar's quest to real love is complicated further by Diane, Eve's best friend, who offers him brief consolation in an unorthodox tryst one night while wearing Eve's borrowed perfumed scarf. Oscar satisfies a hole in Diane's life. Diane serves as a diversion for Oscar, as his prolonged pursuit of Eve results in an unexpected resolution.
