Tormenting the Hen

"Tormenting the Hen" is a caustic comedy set in the world of country mice, where well-intentioned cosmopolites fight with eccentric locals in country homes, black-box theaters, backyards, and neighborhood pubs. Claire (Dameka Hayes) is dragged away to an artists' retreat by a dippy curator (Josephine Decker) to present a political one-act on race, bitterness, and masculinity. Accompanied by her fiancé, Monica (Carolina Monnerat) enjoys a welcome respite until an unexpected visit from town enigma Mutty (Matt Shaw) casts a frightening shadow. While Claire looks after a pair of challenging performers, Joel (Brian H. Brooks) and Adam (David Malinsky), Monica tries to keep her sanity in the face of her lover's diminishing attentions and the proximity of her neighbor. Each woman fights to maintain her autonomy in an increasingly harsh environment, culminating in a soul-shaking climax that leaves neither character nor audience with easy options.
