Ivan the Terrible, Part II: The Boyars' Plot

Sergei Eisenstein, a Soviet film-maker, was ordered by Josef Stalin to produce a three-part epic biography of Russian Czar Ivan Grozny. Because of producer discontent with Eisenstein's use of forbidden experimental filmmaking techniques, production of the epic was halted before the third half could be filmed. After Eisenstein and Stalin died and the Soviet government's attitude changed, this second section was allowed to be shown publicly. By creating a personal army, Ivan the Terrible strives to solidify his rule, while Russian boyar political rivals plot to kill him in this chapter of the novel.
